This post looks at how to declutter your mind, by considering the benefits and providing practical tips for finding some mental clarity.

When we think of clutter, we usually imagine our unwanted or misplaced possessions – the physical stuff. But our minds can easily become cluttered and overwhelmed by the constant information and distractions that fill our daily lives, as well as the mental stress of having lots to do and remember. Just like our homes, we can declutter, and spring clean our minds, to create a peaceful internal environment which will enhance productivity, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.

Benefits of Mental Decluttering

Increased Productivity

Mental clutter can affect your ability to focus and make decisions, leading to decreased productivity. I find it challenging to prioritize tasks and stay on track, when my mind is filled with unnecessary thoughts and worries. Some people are good at “compartmentalizing” and they can easily focus on the things they need to do, but I’m definitely not that type of person!

Reduced Stress

If you don’t regularly declutter your mind, it can easily lead to elevated stress levels. When I am constantly juggling numerous thoughts and concerns I often end up feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Decluttering your mind can be a proactive approach to managing stress and maintaining mental well-being.

Improved Creativity

A clutter-free mind can provide space for your creativity to flourish. When you’re not preoccupied with excessive thoughts, you can engage properly with new ideas and solutions because you have the mental space to do that. This enhanced creative capacity can positively impact various aspects of your life, from problem-solving at work to fostering personal growth.

If you are looking for ways to declutter your mind, so that you can prioritize self-care and live a less stressful, more peaceful life then here are 10 helpful ideas.

How to Declutter your Mind: 10 Helpful Ideas

Give these 10 ways to declutter your mind a try, so you can create a more easeful, less stressful life.

1  Build Good Daily Habits

I have found that having regular habits helps me to reduce the mental clutter of unmade decisions. Being able to fall back on a solid daily routine takes the pressure off, because you don’t have to use energy to think about this part of your day, it just happens automatically. See this post for some useful ideas about habit formation and the daily habits that I have found transformative.

2  Exercise

Moving your body regularly is a sure-fire way to clear your mind. Of course, there is a physical effect, because exercise triggers the release of endorphins and helps to reduce stress hormones, such as cortisol, but it can also act as a total distraction from your thoughts.

If I am having a really stressful day, I make myself go for a run – even if it’s just for 15 minutes – it helps to release tension and I always come back feeling rejuvenated.

3  Mindfulness & Meditation

If it’s not something you currently do, then try to incorporate a mindfulness practice or meditation into your daily routine. These techniques help you to focus on the present moment which can make you more aware of your thoughts and allow you to let go of unnecessary mental clutter.

My experience is that even a few minutes of mindfulness each day can make a significant difference – if you don’t have much time then try mindful eating, everyone has to eat! Check out my post about mindfulness activities for adults which has some great ideas if you’re new to this.

4 Digital Detox

I highly recommend limiting your exposure to digital devices and social media – and no, the irony of saying this in an online blog is not lost on me! Constant notifications and information overload from the digital world will contribute to your mental clutter. At the very least, you can stop your senses from being constantly bombarded with distractions by designating specific times for checking emails and social media – turn your notifications off too during these periods.

5 Journaling

Writing down your thoughts (for me, it has to be on paper, but digital form may work for you) can be a way of externalizing them, it makes it easier to understand what’s on your mind. This simple process can help you identify concerns or issues that may be contributing to mental clutter.

Check out these great journaling tips for beginners from Balance Through Simplicity if you’d like to find out how to get started with journaling. If you are looking to buy a journal, I recommend this 90 day self-care journal, because it has a variety of prompts and page lay-outs to keep it interesting.

6 Get Outdoors More Often

Spending time in nature has been linked to reduced stress levels. The sights and sounds of nature activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and helps to alleviate stress.

The visual beauty of nature can be soothing and calming. Whether it’s the sight of a lush forest or a colorful garden, the aesthetics of nature can provide a welcome break from the visual clutter of screens and urban environments.

7 Declutter Your Living and Working Spaces

Don’t underestimate the impact on your mind of an untidy environment and being surrounded by physical clutter. Clutter makes it difficult to do what you need to do, plus, constantly seeing chaos around you can make you feel bad about not dealing with it, even subconsciously.

Put aside some time to declutter so that you can create an organized and calming atmosphere that supports a clear mind. If you’re looking for a place to begin, decluttering your closet is a great idea, because that can help to create a more easeful start to your day and really set you off on the right path.

8 Cultivate a Gratitude Practice

Practicing gratitude is an easy way to declutter your mind. Unlike most of the other tips on this list it takes very little effort and can be done anywhere. I do this every night before I fall asleep by making a list in my head of everyone and everything I’m grateful for. Focusing on the positive aspects of your life and expressing gratitude can shift your mindset and bring clarity to your thoughts.

9 Prioritize Tasks

Create a to-do list and prioritize tasks based on importance. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make them less daunting and more achievable. This approach helps prevent mental overload and promotes a sense of accomplishment.

10 Good Quality Sleep

By getting enough rest, your body and your mind will feel rejuvenated and less cluttered – sleep is an elixir! Having a consistent sleep schedule has had huge benefits for my mental health. We all know we should be aiming for 7-9 hours, but a recent joint British / Chinese study found the ideal is 7 hours for people aged 38 to 73.

Final Thoughts

Decluttering your mind is a continual process that requires conscious effort and commitment. By incorporating some of these ideas, you can create a mental space that promotes clarity, focus, and overall well-being. Just as a clean and organized physical space can make your day-to-day living more easeful, a clutter-free mind will help you to lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.
